Creating Custom Furnaces in an Open Source Mod

I have a question about creating custom furnaces. From the tutorials I've seen it appears that creating a custom furnace (some kind of machine) generally involves copying a number of underlying Minecraft classes. This obviously will not work for an open source mod since you can't expose the original source.

 

Does anyone have a good way of dealing with this or a better way of creating machines? At this point I'm just going to go with rewriting all of those classes for my custom machine. I suppose that may just be a casualty of not having an official API.

 

I appreciate the help.
