Damage Entity

Hey guys, I've been working on this issue all freaking night!  I'm trying to damage an entity without making the player do it, such as an ability that would deal a specific amount of damage to the entity that the player has clicked, a certain amount of times... I have code made already but I don't want to post it publicly, so if you want to see what I've done, please PM me and I'll send you the code.

Just to break it down: I have a sword that I want to have an ability after you swing it a certain amount of times in a certain time, that works perfectly, and I  want it to send a message to the player when they've activated the ability and when its ready to be used, also working perfectly, but the biggest problem that has been kicking my ass for 3 whole hours is how to damage the entity, I'm not necessarily worried about editing base classes because we want our mod not to work with any others any way, but there has GOT to be a way to do this without modifying the base classes!

What I've tried:

  • entity.attackEntityFrom()
  • entity.damageEntity()    (Messes with base classes because the method is protected)
  • player.attackEntityWithCurrentItem()      (Doesn't work at all for some reason)

I appreciate any help anyone could provide me, I have to go to sleep immediately after I post this because its 1:50 in the morning and I have school tomorrow, so thanks!

I don't get what's wrong with entity.attackEntityFrom().

Me either, I've even used it with a custom damage source.

playerEntity.attackEntityFrom(new ColdDamage(), 1);

For vanilla damage types:

playerEntity.attackEntityFrom(Damage.generic, 2);

(This is, of course, attacking the player, for other entities, you need a reference to that entity).

Apparently I'm a complete and utter jerk and come to this forum just like to make fun of people, be confrontational, and make your personal life miserable.  If you think this is the case, JUST REPORT ME.  Otherwise you're just going to get reported when you reply to my posts and point it out, because odds are, I was trying to be nice.

Exception: If you do not understand Java, I WILL NOT HELP YOU and your thread will get locked.

DO NOT PM ME WITH PROBLEMS. No help will be given.

Here is my code, I think it might help you guys figure out what I'm actually trying to do and how it is supposed to work (Lines 34-74):

package megateam.megamanxrpg;

import java.util.Timer;
import java.util.TimerTask;

import net.minecraft.client.Minecraft;
import net.minecraft.entity.Entity;
import net.minecraft.entity.EntityLiving;
import net.minecraft.entity.player.EntityPlayer;
import net.minecraft.entity.player.EntityPlayerMP;
import net.minecraft.item.EnumToolMaterial;
import net.minecraft.item.ItemStack;
import net.minecraft.item.ItemSword;
import net.minecraft.src.ModLoader;
import net.minecraft.util.DamageSource;
import net.minecraft.world.World;

public class ZBlade extends ItemSword{
int tickssinceuse = 0;
boolean cantripleslash = false;
public static DamageSource blades;

EntityPlayer player = ModLoader.getMinecraftInstance().thePlayer;
World world = ModLoader.getMinecraftInstance().theWorld;

Timer t = new Timer();

public ZBlade(int id, EnumToolMaterial mat){
	super(id, mat);
}

@Override
public boolean onLeftClickEntity(final ItemStack stack, final EntityPlayer player, final Entity entity)
{
	if(MyPlayerHandler.canUseAbility == true){
		MyPlayerHandler.canUseAbility = false;
		MyPlayerHandler.swings = 0;
		MyPlayerHandler.ticks = 0;
		player.sendChatToPlayer("You used the Z-Saber \"Triple Slash\" ability!");
		entity.hurtResistantTime = 0;

		MyPlayerHandler.displayedMsg = false;
		new Timer().schedule(new TimerTask(){
			@Override
			public void run(){
				entity.attackEntityFrom(DamageSource.generic, 10);
			}
		}, 0);
//			new Timer().schedule(new TimerTask(){
//				@Override
//				public void run(){
//					entity.attackEntityFrom(DamageSource.generic, 10);
//				}
//			}, 500);
//			new Timer().schedule(new TimerTask(){
//				@Override
//				public void run(){
//					entity.attackEntityFrom(DamageSource.generic, 10);
//				}
//			}, 1000);
		new Timer().schedule(new TimerTask(){
			@Override
			public void run(){
				MyPlayerHandler.displayedMsg = false;
				MyPlayerHandler.canUseAbility = false;
				MyPlayerHandler.swings = 0;
				MyPlayerHandler.ticks = 0;
			}
		}, 1200);
	}

	return false;
}

@Override
    public ItemStack onItemRightClick(ItemStack itemStack, World world, EntityPlayer entityPlayer) {

        if (!world.isRemote) {
        }

        return itemStack;
    }
}

Again thanks for all the help, I love the community here, its extremely helpful and friendly!

    • They were already updated, and just to double check I even did a cleanup and fresh update from that same page. I'm quite sure drivers are not the problem here.
    • i tried downloading the drivers but it says no AMD graphics hardware has been detected
    • Update your AMD/ATI drivers - get the drivers from their website - do not update via system
    • As the title says i keep on crashing on forge 1.20.1 even without any mods downloaded, i have the latest drivers (nvidia) and vanilla minecraft works perfectly fine for me logs: https://pastebin.com/5UR01yG9
    • Hello everyone, I'm making this post to seek help for my modded block, It's a special block called FrozenBlock supposed to take the place of an old block, then after a set amount of ticks, it's supposed to revert its Block State, Entity, data... to the old block like this :  The problem I have is that the system breaks when handling multi blocks (I tried some fix but none of them worked) :  The bug I have identified is that the function "setOldBlockFields" in the item's "setFrozenBlock" function gets called once for the 1st block of multiblock getting frozen (as it should), but gets called a second time BEFORE creating the first FrozenBlock with the data of the 1st block, hence giving the same data to the two FrozenBlock :   Old Block Fields set BlockState : Block{minecraft:black_bed}[facing=east,occupied=false,part=head] BlockEntity : net.minecraft.world.level.block.entity.BedBlockEntity@73681674 BlockEntityData : id:"minecraft:bed",x:3,y:-60,z:-6} Old Block Fields set BlockState : Block{minecraft:black_bed}[facing=east,occupied=false,part=foot] BlockEntity : net.minecraft.world.level.block.entity.BedBlockEntity@6d1aa3da BlockEntityData : {id:"minecraft:bed",x:2,y:-60,z:-6} Frozen Block Entity set BlockState : Block{minecraft:black_bed}[facing=east,occupied=false,part=foot] BlockPos{x=3, y=-60, z=-6} BlockEntity : net.minecraft.world.level.block.entity.BedBlockEntity@6d1aa3da BlockEntityData : {id:"minecraft:bed",x:2,y:-60,z:-6} Frozen Block Entity set BlockState : Block{minecraft:black_bed}[facing=east,occupied=false,part=foot] BlockPos{x=2, y=-60, z=-6} BlockEntity : net.minecraft.world.level.block.entity.BedBlockEntity@6d1aa3da BlockEntityData : {id:"minecraft:bed",x:2,y:-60,z:-6} here is the code inside my custom "freeze" item :    @Override     public @NotNull InteractionResult useOn(@NotNull UseOnContext pContext) {         if (!pContext.getLevel().isClientSide() && pContext.getHand() == InteractionHand.MAIN_HAND) {             BlockPos blockPos = pContext.getClickedPos();             BlockPos secondBlockPos = getMultiblockPos(blockPos, pContext.getLevel().getBlockState(blockPos));             if (secondBlockPos != null) {                 createFrozenBlock(pContext, secondBlockPos);             }             createFrozenBlock(pContext, blockPos);             return InteractionResult.SUCCESS;         }         return super.useOn(pContext);     }     public static void createFrozenBlock(UseOnContext pContext, BlockPos blockPos) {         BlockState oldState = pContext.getLevel().getBlockState(blockPos);         BlockEntity oldBlockEntity = oldState.hasBlockEntity() ? pContext.getLevel().getBlockEntity(blockPos) : null;         CompoundTag oldBlockEntityData = oldState.hasBlockEntity() ? oldBlockEntity.serializeNBT() : null;         if (oldBlockEntity != null) {             pContext.getLevel().removeBlockEntity(blockPos);         }         BlockState FrozenBlock = setFrozenBlock(oldState, oldBlockEntity, oldBlockEntityData);         pContext.getLevel().setBlockAndUpdate(blockPos, FrozenBlock);     }     public static BlockState setFrozenBlock(BlockState blockState, @Nullable BlockEntity blockEntity, @Nullable CompoundTag blockEntityData) {         BlockState FrozenBlock = BlockRegister.FROZEN_BLOCK.get().defaultBlockState();         ((FrozenBlock) FrozenBlock.getBlock()).setOldBlockFields(blockState, blockEntity, blockEntityData);         return FrozenBlock;     }
