[1.8.9] Guilds - How to read and save files on server?

Hey guys, im currently working on a mod, and i want to add a Guild System, but the thing is i don't know how i could write and read the data on the server. I'll need to implement that player can create their own guilds and then i need to save all Players that are in a Guild. And if the player open the Guild Gui he can see every Player who is in the Guild. How i would get the players which are in the guild if they aren't online? Where do i need to save the data? The most of this should be done in the Guild Gui. How I need to start? Thanks for any help.  ;D

I think you are looking for

WorldSavedData

. You can save stuff to NBT per world or per dimension. There are a few tutorials/examples online.

Don't PM me with questions. They will be ignored! Make a thread on the appropriate board for support.

1.7.10 and older versions of Minecraft are no longer supported due to it's age! Update to the latest version for support.

FYI, while WorldSaveData will do a lot, if for whatever reason you need access to actual files on the server, import System.IO and use the FileStream class.  Minecraft is just like any other application and has full access to the file system.

(e.g. I once had an idea on achieving the Brain Burst effect from Accel World using dimensions...by literally going "find the current dim's region folder...duplicate it, now send the player to this new dimension.")

Warning: 99.9999% of the things you will ever want to do will not need this.

As Draco mentions, Minecraft mods are just Java so anything you can do with Java you can do in your mod. So you should just look up how to do files in Java. File handling can be a bit tricky looking if you haven't done it before. One of the keys is that you need to open and close the files, and usually you manipulate the data in a "stream" that resides in a "buffer" (an area of memory where data is waiting to be accessed, usually in first in, first out order). There are all sorts of variations on how this can be done in Java, but basically it is up to you how you want to pack information into the stream. You basically need a "parser" that you write based on the information you wish to read.

For example, you could make a different file for each guild and simply pack it with a list of player UUIDs. Or you could create one file that lists a name of a guild, a number that indicates how many players are there, then the list of player UUIDs, then name of another guild, and so on.

Anyway, again just look up Java file processing to understand all this better.

I once was rendering a screenshot on the client, sending it to the server, and saving it in a custom NBT file for when the client requested it.  Took a lot of work, but

in the end.  XCompWiz eventually go around to making it realtime, but hey I did what I could do.
