Requests for Simplemods
« on: November 06, 2012, 06:27:52 pm »
I figured a thread for asking for requests for mods should be implemented at this time in our progress. That way, we can see what ideas other people have to help make this mod the best Commands system for Minecraft.

So here is a default request form for asking to implement specific things into Dries007's mods.

Code: [Select]
Mod for the request:
Specific Code:
Reason for asking:
What it will do:

Mod for the request: SimpleCommands, SimpleRegions
Specific Code: No Additional Codes
Reason for asking: This will allow Ops to have more control over their server and security.
What it will do: Allow Ops to see what every code is that is being used... For example: When JohnDoe uses //set - i will see that "JohnDoe used //set at x,x,x"

We should  ask millkbowl (the vault plugin developer) for help us to port his plugin to forge !

Its actually sort of hard because plugins and mods have different features. I believe that we should design our own vault type thing because vault is sort of more plugin-type thing. I dont think Simple Server Mods was meant to have a bukkit plugin system. SIMPLE...get it? But some fun plugins we can convert, and make our own variations like real gold instead of command money.

Anyone agree?

I disagree. Gold and currency are not command or server based mods. I believe the goal here is to get rid of the use of client side mods entirely. I am sure that the currency could be used as above --- however, Checking my mods list, there are already some mods that add currency, coins, stacks, and bags of coins for use by npcs and etc.

Now if people -Really- wanted a currency system you could set a kit redeem to be used by the commands systems.

For example: Kit basic has all the basic tools and a set of leather armor. A player types /kit basic and a message comes up saying "This kit costs "x" of "x" Are you sure you want to redeem this kit?"
The player then type /kit basic allow and the items can either easily /cleared from their inventory through automated systems or etc...

That's the example for one currency system.

I am not too thrilled about currency systems - so if a server side currency system is made... I think it should be a separate mod entirely. I personally think the less client side mods there are the better. Also - if it is like the plugin currency where the currency is kept track of by the server (best option cause of too many items or not enough items.) then it would have to be a separate optional plugin. Not every server likes the currency systems.

Gazeofdisaster: Actually, what i was talking about was an example. We dont need to do this. We could add like Simple Camera or Simple Paintings or whatever. Anything, as long as its simple to learn, install, and use. Thats what im talking about, not just converting plugins.

Mod for the request: Simple Commands
Specific Code: /noclip /invisible /disguise
Reason for asking: Sometimes running a server you want to mess around or easily go places, hide from other players, or disguise yourself as a monster or etc to observe them
What it will do: /noclip will turn clipping off, allowing you to move through blocks.
/invisible true will render your playername, your character invisible, /invisible false will make you visible, /invisible AO will make you appear offline and give the server a log out message

noclip needs a client side modification, i'll see if the real invisibility is possible. I'm not shure if disguise is possible ---Dries007

Mod for the request: Simple Regions
Specific Code: //copy and //paste
Reason for asking: Allow for easy recreation of a desired area
What it will do: //copy will copy all blocks (including redstone placement) that are selected with the wand. //paste will paste or set those blocks where your pointing (if thats not possible then I suppose selecting co-ordinates would work too)

Mod for the request: Register system
Reason for asking: Non premium ftb server
What it will do: same system like the bukkit plugin Authme or xAuth.
use commands like /register "setpasword" for the first time and next time a player logs in
use command like /login password. This way non premium players are protected.

This will be low priority. I did this for 1.2.5. Might make this a seperate mod. ---Dries007

Mod for the request: Factions system
Reason for asking: protect land
What it will do: look at factions or towny as plugin.

Lots and lots of time would be needed for this. If I get help, mabye.

I know the second one is a big request but it'd be very VERY handy.
the first one seems like something that would not be to hard but i'm not sure.

Mod for the Request: SimpleRegions
Reason for asking: Anti-griefer measure for SMP servers
What it will do: Allows the server admin to disable fire's ability to spread or consume blocks, thus preventing lava/flint n steel griefing

Mod for the Request: SimpleRegions
Reason for asking: Anti-griefer measure for SMP servers
What it will do: Prevents explosions (such as TNT) from breaking blocks. This prevents TNT griefing. Also makes Creepers less dangerous for buildings (but not for players, since it will still deal damage).

These two will add most of the functionality necessary for the region protection.

This is already the mod. ~Dries007

The problem with authme or etc is that 80% of the minecraft playerbase is legit players that bought the game. The other users use cracked clients thus why online mode was incorporated anyways. It would be very hard to code in an authorization system into the vanilla minecraft servers. Even the regular bukkit plugins that incorporated this had LOTS of bugs. For example it will corrupt player data, not save their items each time they log off, so if they made changes to their inventory before logging out, they would lose those items... the list goes on, and overall it is a good request - I am just personally not too fond of the idea. If other players thinks its a good idea, maybe it might be worked in :D (Plus i am too lazy to test such an extensive and complicated command LMAO)

Hmm okey i understand.
though I find it interesting why it would be so hard.
i thought it'd be something like this :
check a file is a playername exists, if not, let them type a password and save that.
next login, check again, and ask for the password.
What does this have to do with corrupting player files?
Care to explain a bit more?
Indeed there is the thing of not letting them access inventories while not logged in.
If i had more time besides college work, i'd look into it myself and try it, but I dont have the time to develop myself.

Essentially all these requests are up to Dries007 to incorporate because this is his mod... but that doesn't mean that other people can discuss about the requests...

::
Explanation
Hidden
I am not a coder myself for java, but I do know about it, and how it works. I prefer not to code unless I have to. The problem lies in the communication between client and server. Initially it might seem easy, but your basically building a whole new log-in system for minecraft which means you have to request that the mods check the client log-in and then issue them a password server-side. Now, should those passwords be encrypted? There goes a whole other new set of coding to work into the mod. Personally, if your going to have an offline server I find it easier to make a community forum or have the people in it using some sort of chat system then white-listing the IPs.

As far as corrupting the playerfiles... Items stored in the inventory of the player now require each user (including online users) to now enter a password serverside as well as clientside. These passwords are going to either be stored in a separate .dat file. From there the mod must look up everything and if the inventories or something doesn't match the playerfile then it will corrupt the playerdata.

Example: 1) The server crashes -- no big deal, restart it.
2) playerside inventory was not saved, previous items before serversave are now lost or unknown entity ids
3) now you have way more bugs to try and work out into a completely new code
::

Now, if any of you are familiar with Terraria, that game introduced serverside inventory and serverside passwords. It was a very LEGIT way of running offline-mode servers. However, even that game had the same problem. Sometimes items would outright disappear making moderators or ops almost daily have to "give back" the items. It made the game not fun at all.

Nah. Dries is a great guy, and so is weneg. Gotta remember, these people are doing this because they like it, and they want features like these as much as you. If you look at the previous posts dries will make comments in green about them - whether or not they are accepted, or etc...

Though, you have to remember... The whole point of this mod is SIMPLE commands... so some stuff might be released in seperate mods like how commands and regions are separate mods.

Just thought of something new.

request for the mod : simple commands
what command : /remove items <radius>
what it does : removes all the floating entities in the radius
this is very handy for a modded server that has overflowing pipes, or if nukes went boom.
a lot of floating entities causes serious server lag.

And thanks for the explanation ^^

Already exists

Please use for bugs and requests the issuessite on github until we have a other solution
Link: https://github.com/dries007/SimpleMods/issues?state=open

If you make a request, just write "Request: whatever" in the title

Thats way better than a excelfile, because it's much cleaner

I will add labels to it

Specific Code: I'm a programmer but I don't do Java

Reason for asking: It will make managing my servers easier and I hope it will do the same for others

What it will do:
  • It creates 2 config files:
    • Players+Permissions
    • Regions
  • This way you can set up Permissions and Region flags/owners with your favorite text editor
  • This will enable using (Linux) symlinks so you can use the same Permissions across multiple servers

I wish I could do this, but I like NBT data because its so easy to use (as a coder, not a user).
I'm currently looking into the ForgeEssentials (FE) project. They have invited my to come on board and work together, they have a bunch of people already and are basically doing the same thing but better coded.
Remember that this was never intended as a WorldEdit clone/replacement, it was meant as a mod that added commands, with a basic permission system. FE is integrating WorldEdit and WorldGuard into a mod (like SinglePlayerCommands but way more flexible and open source).

I'll have to see what the future of FE brings and whether I could integrate my commands into FE.
If that is possible, I might stop with this mod, I don't know yet.

For now, not much will be done by me I'm afraid.

request for the mod : simple commands
what command : //undo
what it does : reverts the action that was taken when useing the wand.
for example i by mistake wiped out a players build as my region selection did not change
when i used the wand and it fill in a huge area and 50 blocks high and i was unable to revert it
and lost the players build in the process.

not sure but this may work in combination to simple backup?

Mod for the request: SimpleRegions
Specific Code:
Reason for asking: Mis-clicks with the wand can result in fairly disastrous situations, so I believe that a //undo command would be very helpfull.
What it will do: Undo the effects last region-editing command, such as //set or //fix.

Just something that I think would be very useful, but I have no idea how feasible it would be coding wise.

Mod for request: SimpleBlock
What does it do: Blocks client-side 'hack' mods like x-ray vision, flight, hypermine, logger...

Similar in concept to some of the bukkit plugins designed to prevent hacked clients or cheaty client-side mods from doing Bad Things(tm) to a server community.

Failing that, something which prevents x-ray mods, et al, from functioning.

That is pretty much impossible for me. I'm sorry for this, but I won't be adding more stuff to SM. I work on ForgeEssentials now too. This system has a much better framework and a team that might be able to accomplish this. (the time, weather or even the client side hax)

Ya'know, dries, I originally wanted to do the clientsidehax thing, but will have to find a way to intercept the world data first...
Read the EAQ before posting! OR ELSE!

I do know that. Its just that i know that someone cant just take on hundreds and hundreds of requests, because by this rate, in a month there WILL BE hundreds of requests. And coding is not that easy

Not to go off topic, but my question is on this topic although strays a bit fro the original, but I have given some thought to a more efficient way of doing this other than adding overhead by undoing/changing what has already been done.

The server side, although does no rendering, with a couple of checks can determine if a block is visible or not.

The idea I have is the server keeping chunk data of only visible blocks, and using it for world data communication. I have never liked the idea of intercepting the data.

This couldn't be done with a simple mod, would need a transformer to change some base classes, but it seems to me it could be done without breaking too many mods. It also seems to me that although memory requirements would go up slightly, it could increase performance by dealing with a lighter weight world data when communicating.

One could also design it so it would not require any extra physically saved world data(as I know this is the number one cause of large world files causing lag, caching issues), since you would only need to assemble once per chunk load.

Is there a big issue I am not seeing, or is this simply something people have been alright with by simply intercepting the packets?

Mod for the request: a new one, I think SimpleCity would be a great name (it remembers to me SimCity 4, lol)
Specific Code: sorry i'm not a programmer
Reason for asking: I was the designer of a bukkit RPG server (one of the best italian server, right now, made with ESL) who wanted to make a modded one; now I know that MCPC is too little (and too bugged) to make all the mod I wanted, so I'm thinking to replace 100% of bukkit with your Simple Mod, but I need a last feature
What it will do: towny like, the mod wuold create group of users united under the same city; this group should have their own chat (like the towny chat and national chat), and they should share the same pubblic claimed plot. They also should have a private / pubblic plot system.

Here we are:
-creation of group of users called "city"
-creation of group of city called "nation"
-the group should share a chat system
-the city would have a plotting system, where every citizien could use all the pubblic plots, but outsiders can't
-the citiziens may (eventually) have a private plot system
-the plots would be pvp off (or there would be a way to toggle pvp off/on in a city)
-a rank system (mayor - assistant - citizien), where just the first can disband the city, the first two can claim land from outside and can sell the plot that citizien can claim as private (I use the world sell, but I'm not asking an economic system :D)

I know that wuold be a lot (really A LOT) of work, but now it's the last important think that forge servers can't have.
I hope you would do so. If you do so, I would dedicate to you a curch of the religion of my RPG on my next server <3

(sorry for bad english, I'm Italian...)

Mod for the request:Simple Announce
Specific Code:Don't have a clue
Reason for asking:Better server communication, I hate using signs.
What it will do: Similar to /broadcast or /say but on a timed system. You could have your message announced at a configurable amount of time.
