Only ops have access to the /backup command. You can change the interval, name,.... in the config.

Website! (download here)

If you want a non-Forge version, reply to this topic.

Please send me all the typo's you found, I'm from Belgium and I'm a little dyslectic and suck @ typing.

Warning: If you have limited HDD space and/or a giant world and/or are using Mystcraft (makes for huge world folders  ;)) use the automatic old-backup-removal-system™

If you are having proplems, turn debug mode on, let your server run for at least 2 backup intervals and post the log (Hint: Set the interval to 1 minute  ;))

This is the latest in a series of awesome mods! Keep it up!
Now, to stop me from using bukkit, multiverse in simple server form would be awesome.
So, what would happen if I did push that shiny red button over there? ... Really? ... Can I try it? ... Damn.

The closed thing to multiverse is Mystcraft. I might look into a way of giving specific dimensions specific properties (gamemode,....).

Might I recommend more backup-generic options, such as rolling backup count and date, incremental updates, etc...?

I don't think incremental updates are possible.
With count you mean the amount of backups made?
And with date? When last backup was made?

All recommendations are welcome!

Something I thought of myself was a 'smarter' backup system:
Make a backup when the last player leaves and then stop making backups until someone joins again.

I use incremental updates on my backup system on my server just fine.

I keep the last 20 backups or the last weeks worth of backups, whichever is greater.

All automatic.

I assume you have a script that does /save-off, /save-all, Make backup, /save-on.

But how do you make the incremental updates?
(If i'm allowed to know  ;))

The 'double check' (the last 20 backups or the last weeks worth of backups, whichever is greater) is a good idea.

MC's server runs in a tmux session, the script feeds it the save-off and so forth commands at the proper times, waiting for a response string from MC stating that it is complete.  I just use rsync for most things.

So you use rsync for the incremental updates? The problem is that i have no clue as to how something like that can be done in Java (Without external tools)

Many ways.  Do it manually (not 'that' hard).  Bring in an external library.  Just call external programs like rsync that are known to work exceedingly well.  Etc...  :)

Do it manually (not 'that' hard).
If you are a proper coder (!=me)
Bring in an external library.
Best option i think.
Just call external programs like rsync that are known to work exceedingly well.
That might be possible, but it would have to be a java app, that's the only thing that will run on Win,Linux & mac and we already know that it's installed  :)

Thanks for the suggestion & info!

You can already do this, to an extent. You set your config file settings to back up every x time, and backups are good for a week. Make sure that x time is not more than 20 times a week. So, say, set them to twice a day. Badda bing, badda boom. However, an additional flag of 'x many backups before the oldest starts getting deleted' might be good.

Yes, that's what I mean, I'll make an option to set a minimum number of backups before older ones get deleted.

Any thoughts on the "no players, only 1 backup" thing?

first, your mod is great.... really great :D

second, the jenkins site is down  :( since a few days?

third: Could you maybe add a option to enable a auto-save feature (all 5-15 minutes the mods types /save-all)? I dont find anything like that for vanilla server and it is a simple mod too, so I think that is a job for you ;)

Updated SimpleBackup. Now has the save-all interval stuff.

Hi,

I'm running this on a Mac and can't make it work. The only thing console shows is:

The coremod SimpleBackup.jar does not contain a valid jar manifest- it will be ignored

Thanks for any help.

Simplebackup is one that requires the mod to be both in the coremods and the mod folder for it to work

Thanks.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm confident that'll work.

Perhaps it'd be worth mentioning it in your installation guide? (http://www.minecraftforge.net/forum/index.php/topic,3262.0.html)

Cheers.

I was considering using this tool. But we'll soon move on to the 1.4.5 so if it's dead I'll have to stick with the old bash "sending letters to the screen" thingy (which I don't like much...).

The plugin do is job very well.
The "backup" command is working in the console. But ingame I have permission denied, I am op and in admin group.

Not a real problem for me, the auto backup is ok.

The permission denied is the result of some vanilla changes, I'll take a look at it when I have time. The mcmod.info is unfortunate but harmelss

mod is working as intented (I tested just manual save from console), but there's a little bug with file naming:
Code: [Select]
...$ date --rfc-3339=seconds ; ( ls | tail -n1 )
2012-12-04 11:13:08+01:00
world_2012-11-4_11-12.zip

number of a month is probably 0-based, so simply adding 1 should fix this.

seems like a nice mod (much better way of doing backups than the write-to-screen thingy), I'll keep it on our little server, thank you for making it :)

We are moving from Craftbukkit to Forge and needing an automatic backup routine for it.   This mod seems to be what we are looking for.

I also noticed the backup naming issue but that really doesn't affect anything as I usually look at the modification date of the files anyways if I have to do a restore.

In earlier posts, it was mentioned of not making backups if there hasn't been anyone on the system.  This would be handy to keep the # of backups down.  No sense on making a backup if nothing had been changed.

The other thing I noticed is that we run three different worlds;  normal, end, and flat.  SimpleBackup appears to only backup our 'normal' world.  Am I missing something?

I know the name of the mod is SimpleBackup but it would also be nice if it could backup the configs for Forge & its mods.  Nothing is more dangerous than someone mucking around in a config file. :)

BTW - Thank you for making this mod, my friends and I thank you.

That is a very nice suggestion (the config thing).

The config thing isn't my idea, it was a feature of the BukkitBackup http://bukkitbackup.com/ which also backups all the worlds on a Minecraft server.

We are just using the NetherPortal which is linked to Tsero_nether and another Portal that I linked to a Tsero_flat
Under the server's Minecraft folder each world has its own folder, with its respective level.dat, uid.dat, data & region folders.

I'm not looking for all the features that BukkitBackup provides, some of which you have already taken care of, but multiworld would be necessary for a backup solution.

Its really annoying that forge doesnt have this option or vanilla mc servers :/ I dont have access to the root so I cant made a script like others ;( so this is the only automatic way I know, to automaticly save my world all 15 minutes :( +  backup every day.

For anyone waiting for 1.4.6, I have made my own backup mod (and then I found out there already was this one, made me feel like I had done all that work for nothing, but w/e) which does support 1.4.6. So while you are waiting for this to update I would encourage you to come try BackMeUp.

I should probably say this too, just so that I don't make the wrong impression: I am not trying to steal SimpleBackup's users, nor am I trying to say this mod is any better or worse than mine (like I said, if I had known this existed I probably wouldn't have bothered with making my mod). I am just offering an alternative while we wait for SimpleBackup to update.

The update is 75% done but since its the 25th and families love that day to waist my time it won't come out until the 26th.

I'm completely re-writing the system so you can backup your configs, mods and worlds (basically every folder in the server directory).
(I love the new config system forge uses :p)

Thank you for the update.   This will nice until Backup is completed in ForgeEssentials.

It does exactly what I need though it does have one problem.

I have the interval set for 2 hours and the option enabled for it to not backup if no one is logged into the server.  However, this needs to be tweaked because it will only do backups when someone is logged in.

It should check to see if anyone has logged in since the last backup, if there has then it should go ahead and do the backup.  If no one has logged in then there is no need to make a backup.

Other than that, I love the folder options, the fact I can have it backup the configs and any other folder that I want makes this a must have.

Thanks again

Thank you for the update.   This will nice until Backup is completed in ForgeEssentials.

Abrar actually copied most of my code for the actual backup :p
(As its open source I don't mind.)

Btw, I like the suggestion. I'll see what I can do.

I have recently started to create videos of minecraft and was wondering if it was possible to alter Backup to work clientside to help prevent the unfortunate from happening?

I created an account here just to ask this. :D

I've been using your mod to back up my server for a while now and loving it. I was wondering, though, would it be possible to have it generate two separate backup folders with separate backup periods? I ask because I can't have this backup taking up 250 GB, but I want both a long-term historical record of the server (so, an update every 24 hours or something, with no limit on how many to make) but ALSO a short term of only 50 or so backups, each about 5 minutes apart, for short term damage reversal and the like.

As far as I can tell, the only way to accomplish this is to have it back up every 5 minutes, with no limit, but every day or so, take one backup and manually move it to a new backup folder and delete the old short term files.

Thanks for a response!

Hi, want to try this out, as xy tank blocks just crashed my server. Im using 1.4.7 FTB, ultimate pack. Will this work for 1.4.7? it says it in the title, but at DL page it states 1.4.6 is newest? Thanks

It should work with 1.4.7. I'm not shure what it's doing with XYcraft stuff. Can I have a crashlog please?

Please note: It did not crash with your mod installed, but i should have known better to even run the server from past events, and other servers to not have a backup plan. So now that one has happen, now i was shopping for one.

Ill paste part of the crash here, if your still interested in the crash details. It appeared when a player of mine, placed the items to make a tank, is what done it, i think with the xycraft glass and engineering block. Thank for responding. I will load it and try this out on my server.
