[0.8.1] Atomic Science (v0.0.6)
« on: August 26, 2012, 04:18:49 AM »
Atomic Science
Stage: Alpha

Electricity generation is always a burden. That's why we are here to bring in high tech nuclear power to solve all your electricity-lack problems. With our fission reactors, fusion reactors, antimatter generators and thorium power, you won't be lacking electricity ever again!

Released Content
The main features this mod adds are nuclear fission, nuclear fission, antimatter generation and antimatter reactors.

Ores
Uranium Ore - Used to do nuclear fission

Nuclear Power
Refined Uranium - Refined in a centrifuge
Centrifuge - A machine used to refine the uranium.
Uranium Rod - An uranium rod to be inserted to a reactor core. Crafting out of 3 uranium in a straight line.
Reactor Core - The core of the nuclear reactor. This thing will build up heat and do nuclear fission within it. The heat will evaporate water around it. The more heat, the faster and the more water it will evaporate. If the heat is over 2000, the reactor will meltdown and explode.
Reactor Turbine - Collecting the steam from the evaporated water and transferring them to electricity. Place these above water blocks and it will collect the steam from them generating electricity from the top.
Control Rods - Placed in the reactor expansion blocks to control the temperature of the reactor
Reactor Expansion - An expansion block to be placed next to reactor

Planned Content
Antimatter Power
Particle Accelerator - Used to accelerate atoms to generate antimatter
Antimatter Cell - A cell to store antimatter and makes sure it doesn't touch any matter
Fulmination Generator - Generates electricity from explosions caused by antimatter

Download for Minecraft 1.3.2

*cough cough* might want to make a wiki on how to use before we blow something up. Anyways i added it too my server just don't know how to use it yet.

It's kinda in alpha so I don't really want to make a big wiki, but I'll make a brief on how things work. As for now, follow that picture in the OP.

it actually turns into lava, what you do is take out the fuel rod once it is very hot, then let it cool off, while still producing power, then once it is cool again, replace the fuel rod.

It will be when you add control rods on.

Very nice addon, Maybe add a gui to the Reactor core later on to see the temperature. : )
Or an upgraded version of the reactor core with more Uranium rod chambers. : D

Ideas:

Along the lines of the thorium reactor, you could implement either a molten salt or liquid metal (lead) reactor.

The both work in very similar ways, having and input/output of liquid salt or metal, and having an input/output of steam to drive the turbines.

The liquid metal reactor, if lead is used, will be self shielded from at least the gamma radiation emitted, the neutron radiation would still be a problem (though slightly reduced by reflection off the lead).  The liquid metal reactor could do without the liquid input, but i suggest doing so to have a heater box that your originally put solid lead into that melts it and sends to to the reactor. This reactor could use either the enriched uranium fuel rods, or thorium ones.

If sodium is used for the liquid metal reactor, you could have it go boom if something goes wrong, as liquid sodium + water = boom

The liquid salt reactor could also be run in such a way that it takes another set of pipe inputs, to use a liquid thorium based salt as fuel, so it could have 2 salt inputs/outputs and 1 water input/output.

both of these reactor designs are breeder reactors, so if you do implement some sort of fuel use, then these should probably last much much longer (200-300 times).

examples:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Molten_Salt_Reactor.svg
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lead-Cooled_Fast_Reactor_Schemata.svg

Other ideas:

Back on my having the fusion reactors produce helium, here is another use for the stuff.

A gas cooled nuclear reactor.  you could have a gas cooled reactor, which inputs Helium cool helium, outputs hot helium, which then goes into a heat exchange that inputs heavy water and outputs deuterium,  I this would work just like the image below, but replacing the turbine with a heat exchange to water.  Water will break down at approximately 1100K or so, which can easily be achieved in a gas cooled reactor.

This gives a way to produce the hydrogen for a fusion reactor, without needing to use electricity.

On the topic discussed in the IRC:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uranium#Human_exposure

http://web.ead.anl.gov/uranium/guide/ucompound/health/index.cfm

Both indicate that externally uranium is safe, which could easily be determined from the primary decay modes.  Any damage from uranium would only make sense to come from the mining of it (inhaling dust) or effects during the use if it (fission products can be dangerous).

Would it be possible to add the ability to 'kick' the uranium rods out of the reactor with a redstone pulse? I feel like having an 'Emergency Shutdown' button/lever could be useful in the event of a meltdown, or catastrophic chain reaction (if such a thing will exist for the mod).

In my to-do list. The redstone current will shut it off.
